Summary

The darkest and most disturbing case report from the files of Kinsey Millhone, Y is for Yesterday begins in 1979, when four teenage boys from an elite private school sexually assault a fourteen-year-old classmate—and film the attack。 Not long after, the tape goes missing and the suspected thief, a fellow classmate, is murdered。 In the investigation that follows, one boy turns state’s evidence and two of his peers are convicted。 But the ringleader escapes without a trace。

Now, it’s 1989 and one of the perpetrators, Fritz McCabe, has been released from prison。 Moody, unrepentant, and angry, he is a virtual prisoner of his ever-watchful parents—until a copy of the missing tape arrives with a ransom demand。 That’s when the McCabes call Kinsey Millhone for help。 As she is drawn into their family drama, she keeps a watchful eye on Fritz。 But he’s not the only one being haunted by the past。 A vicious sociopath with a grudge against Millhone may be leaving traces of himself for her to find…

So much repetition!Did not care for any of the characters。 The narration was good

The last and best if Kinsey Milhone novels。Of all of Sue Grafton‘s series about the Kinsey Milhone saga, this was the most captivating。 It keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end!

Gutted this is the last Sue Grafton, as with the other 24 good honest thriller。 I'll miss Kinsey。 Gutted this is the last Sue Grafton, as with the other 24 good honest thriller。 I'll miss Kinsey。 。。。more

Too long for the story (which required even MORE length to repeat what was already covered) and a "stretch" to believe how high schoolers of 1979 would behave and talk EXCEPT for the actual acts done。 Still, I'll miss the series。 Too long for the story (which required even MORE length to repeat what was already covered) and a "stretch" to believe how high schoolers of 1979 would behave and talk EXCEPT for the actual acts done。 Still, I'll miss the series。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It was pretty convoluted throughout。 But, the Epilogue was ridiculous。 When Ned attacked Kinsey, all her self defense lessons were forgotten。 Pearl had to save the day。 Even as Pearl was fighting him, Kinsey just stood there。 What a joke。 Pearl saved the day and was the hero of the book。

There were a couple of twists and turns that made this story intriguing up to the last minute of the epilogue。 I was sort of hopeful that there may have been an addendum, a post script, noting that this is the end of the series。 I feel sort of sad to know that the author likely had a 26th book in the works but we will never know。 I like to think Kinsey marries Cheney and that she takes ownership of Killer and that everybody else just continues to live forever。

Last book in a consistently good series。

The End。 The alphabet ends with Z, but unfortunately, Grafton's series ends with Y。 Grafton passing away before writing the last title of the series so Kinsey Millhone's story ends here with Y。 In the last Millhone case, Kinsey is hired to track down a blackmailer。 10 years ago a tape was made by drunk, stupid high schoolers and now it has resurfaced with a $25,000 price tag or else。 Wrapped up into the tape is the murder of one of those classmates 10 years ago and questions about her death are The End。 The alphabet ends with Z, but unfortunately, Grafton's series ends with Y。 Grafton passing away before writing the last title of the series so Kinsey Millhone's story ends here with Y。 In the last Millhone case, Kinsey is hired to track down a blackmailer。 10 years ago a tape was made by drunk, stupid high schoolers and now it has resurfaced with a $25,000 price tag or else。 Wrapped up into the tape is the murder of one of those classmates 10 years ago and questions about her death are resurfacing along with the tape。 Alongside this case, Kinsey is on the lookout for Ned Lowe (sp? I read this via audiobook so I don't know the spelling of his name) who would like nothing more than to see Kinsey dead。 As with all the Millhone cases, loose ends get tied up, truths are exposed, and the bad guys get caught。 I like that the story just ends like all the other stories before and there isn't this big dramatic finale。 I'm sure Grafton had notes and perhaps even chapters written for the Z book but since that didn't come to be I find myself appreciating how it just ends and Kinsey Millhone just continues to exist in the world Grafton created, doing the work she does。 Life so rarely holds dramatic finales so the premature ending to this series feels right。 。。。more

The last of this author’s books。 She almost made it to Z。 Always an easy read with these adult Nancy Drew like Private Eye tales。

I really enjoyed reading this book。 So sad that it’s the last。

I've around half of Sue Grafton's books, but have not read them in sequence, and find it makes no difference。 They work in any order。 Entertaining detective cases。 I've around half of Sue Grafton's books, but have not read them in sequence, and find it makes no difference。 They work in any order。 Entertaining detective cases。 。。。more

It was nice reading you, A-Z。 I'm not saying they were stellar by any means, but it was fun being in Kinsey's world for the last two years。 I'll miss her and Henry and Rosie。 RIP Sue。 I'm always up to support a local Louisvillian。 Next up, a trip to see her house。 🥰🥰 It was nice reading you, A-Z。 I'm not saying they were stellar by any means, but it was fun being in Kinsey's world for the last two years。 I'll miss her and Henry and Rosie。 RIP Sue。 I'm always up to support a local Louisvillian。 Next up, a trip to see her house。 🥰🥰 。。。more

I just finished reading Sue Grafton's last book, Y is for Yesterday, and it was so good。 I'm going to miss Kinsey Milhone。 Sue Grafton could really spin a good mystery and all before cellphones and PC computers! I'm sad that she didn't live long enough to finish the alphabet。 I so wanted to see how she brought it to a close, how Kinsey walked into the next decade of personal computers and later cellphones。 I am hoping that Sue Grafton left an outline of Z is for Z________。 Rest in peace, Sue。❤ I just finished reading Sue Grafton's last book, Y is for Yesterday, and it was so good。 I'm going to miss Kinsey Milhone。 Sue Grafton could really spin a good mystery and all before cellphones and PC computers! I have finally finished this book。 It is not my usual genre and I have not read any of her other books。 I was caught off guard when the original crime was committed in 1979 but private eye Kinsey is living in 1989 and not present day even though the book was written in 2017。 A student from an exclusive high school is killed and the suspect has been convicted and imprisoned。 10 years later, he has been released and is now being extorted because of a video tape that shows he was part of a sexual a I have finally finished this book。 It is not my usual genre and I have not read any of her other books。 I was caught off guard when the original crime was committed in 1979 but private eye Kinsey is living in 1989 and not present day even though the book was written in 2017。 A student from an exclusive high school is killed and the suspect has been convicted and imprisoned。 10 years later, he has been released and is now being extorted because of a video tape that shows he was part of a sexual assault。 Kinsey has been hired by the parents to find the extortionists。 But Kinsey has her own baggage to deal with in the form of a Ned Lowe who attacked her in previous books。 She needs to solve her case but watch her back at the same time。 It was very slow going for me and I almost gave up on it。 It bothered me that there was a gang assault on a 14 year old girl but the characters dismissed it as a joke。 It should have been dealt with more seriously。 I preferred when Kinsey has dealings with Ned。 That storyline was much more interesting and I would hurry through the other chapters to get back to it。 What is interesting also is that there are no cell phones or online access to get information quickly。 Kinsey would have to leave messages and wait a day or 2 for the reply。 It is also very long at 500+ pages。 And since I read this so slowly, it was hard to keep the characters straight。 But I finished it and am proud of myself for that。 。。。more

I love this series and Kinsey will always occupy a special place in the personal library of my heart—but this one was tough。 The book ultimately comes down on the right side of the issue of sexual assault, I think, but the handling is muddled and the characters are all so repeatedly unpleasant that I didn’t enjoy reading about them or want to give them the benefit of any nuance (of which there isn’t much, to be honest)。 Still sad that the alphabet ends at Y。 I will miss Kinsey and her saucy atti I love this series and Kinsey will always occupy a special place in the personal library of my heart—but this one was tough。 The book ultimately comes down on the right side of the issue of sexual assault, I think, but the handling is muddled and the characters are all so repeatedly unpleasant that I didn’t enjoy reading about them or want to give them the benefit of any nuance (of which there isn’t much, to be honest)。 Still sad that the alphabet ends at Y。 I will miss Kinsey and her saucy attitude。 。。。more

Not quite as good as her others。 Kinsey was still a great character, but the story line was too jumpy without enough depth。

This was one of my favorites by this author。 The back story really kept my interest and made me want to keep reading。 With unexpected twists but all the loose ends tied up in the end, it was good entertainment。

I'd forgotten how much I like the character of Kinsey Millhone and Sue Grafton's writing overall。 I felt sad as I read it, knowing Sue has died and this is the last book。 I might have to start the series over again。 I'd forgotten how much I like the character of Kinsey Millhone and Sue Grafton's writing overall。 I felt sad as I read it, knowing Sue has died and this is the last book。 I might have to start the series over again。 。。。more

Not well constructed。 We hear about the two crimes in sickening detail at least four times each。 At several points, k doesn’t do the obvious cop thing which would have eliminated later problems。 She also violated confidentiality too often。 The final confrontation rings false and is unsatisfying and unrealistic。

With Sue’s passing this is the final novel for Kinsey Millhone, a series I’ve been listening to or reading for at least 15 years。 I think it knowing it was the final one did change my feelings going to it, and I’m exceedingly glad that it works well enough as a finale for Kinsey and everyone in her world。 I think B is for Burglar, L is for Lawless, and P is for Peril are favourites, but they’re all enjoyable。 Y may not be the best Kinsey, but it’s still Kinsey and if you’ve been a fan for 25 nov With Sue’s passing this is the final novel for Kinsey Millhone, a series I’ve been listening to or reading for at least 15 years。 I think it knowing it was the final one did change my feelings going to it, and I’m exceedingly glad that it works well enough as a finale for Kinsey and everyone in her world。 I think B is for Burglar, L is for Lawless, and P is for Peril are favourites, but they’re all enjoyable。 Y may not be the best Kinsey, but it’s still Kinsey and if you’ve been a fan for 25 novels, this is as good as any for her to go out on。 。。。more

I loved all the Kinsey Milhone books。 I’ve read them all。 The premise for this was good, but it just wasn’t executed to the level I believe the very last Kinsey novel deserved。 I gave it 3 stars, but I was truly being gracious and that’s only because there was just enough of the “old” Kinsey to scrape through。 If you’ve read the series, you need to read this。 Just don’t expect there to be the conclusion you thought the series finale would bring。
